Ruth and Richard Julin Foundation

Ruth and Richard Julin Foundation hereby invites applications for research and travel grants.

Purpose

The foundation promotes medical research, primarily in the fields of gastroenterology and hepatology. Grants may be applied for in order to conduct research projects and travel to other research institutions, as well as to acquire new knowledge and methods. Applications for travel to conventions and the like will not be considered.

Eligibility

Researchers, affiliated to Karolinska Institutet or another medical faculty at a Swedish university, who have earned a doctoral degree and registered doctoral students who are expected to earn a degree during the current calendar year are eligible to apply. Doctoral students must attach a certificate from their supervisor.

Priority is given to applicants early in their research career.

Grants can be awarded no more than five times to one and the same researcher. The applicant who previously received funds from the foundation must attach a progress report for consideration of the new application.

Amount

The disposable amount is usually between 1,500,000 and 2,200,000 SEK, but can also vary between years. Awarded grants varies between 100,000 and 150,000 SEK per person. You can never get more than the requested amount.

If you have applied for multiple travel grants and have been granted all of them, you may only receive one of the grants.

Application

The application must contain a research plan of maximum 15 000 charachters (approximately 4 A4-pages), an abstract of about 1 A4-page, ethical considerations and a budget where indirect costs must also be stated.

The following attachments should be enclosed:

  1. A publication list stating the 10 most relevant publications for this call besides a complete publication list for the previous 5 years and the current year. Minimum for doctoral students without publications, is to attache a manuscript
  2. For applicants who have previously been awarded grants from this call, a progress report must be attched for consideration of the new application
  3. For doctoral students who are expected to earn a degree during the current calendar year a certificate form their supervisor must be attached.

If applying for a research travel to another institution, also attach the following:

  1. Personal invitation from the host department.

Note that you should not add co-applicants to this call.

The application must be submitted digitally. The online form will be available ​through KI Prisma during the application period, January 6 – 20, 2026. The application period opens at 10 am on January 6 and closes 2 pm on January 20.

Decision

Decision of grant will be taken by the Board of the Foundation. All applicants will be notified by e-mail in May.

Reports

For this call, a short scientific report, on about ½ A4 page, and a short financial report, on about ½ A4 page, must be submitted describing how the funds received have been used. If the funds have only been partially or not used during the period of disposition, these must be refunded to the Foundation.

Reporting will be done via Prisma about 12 months after the money has been paid out. Notification will be sent via email from Prisma when it is time to report.
